Laser treatments use light energy to stimulate collagen production. Discomfort is minimal, usually described as a slight pinching sensation. Patients can return to their usual activities immediately. Several treatments may be required for optimal improvement.
Even though IPL is often thought of as a laser treatment, the technology used is different—and can be more effective in treating acne scars. IPL involves targeting treatment areas with pulses of light energy of various wavelengths that are less precise than laser wavelengths. The multiple wavelengths emitted during IPL treatments target more skin cells with a single pulse than during a laser treatment without damaging the skin’s surface.

One of the simplest and most popular scar treatment options is the use of silicone sheeting. The silicone sheet is a soft, flexible material applied directly to the scar, underneath clothing. It is painless and will gradually reduce the appearance of hardened, raised scars. Results are not as dramatic as some other procedures, but there is no discomfort or downtime involved.
Certain types of scars may respond to steroid injections. For instance, steroids can be helpful in reducing the itching or discomfort associated with some scars. I’ll carefully assess whether or not steroid injections are a good option for you.
Of course, for more dramatic scars or for scars that do not respond to non-invasive treatment, surgery is still an option. Particularly for surgical scar revision, choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon is of the utmost importance. I have the education and experience to improve old scars, without creating equally problematic new scars.
