How Long Do Breast Implants Last?

The longevity of your breast augmentation depends on a variety of factors, from the type of implant you choose to your surgeon’s skill level and your lifestyle and overall health. The standard guidelines are that breast implants should be replaced every 10 to 15 years, although many patients enjoy their implants for much longer.

How Often Should I Get My Breast Implants Checked Out?

The FDA recommends getting your breast implants scanned 3 years after your breast augmentation and every 2 years thereafter. This proactive approach helps patients monitor changes to their implants and address concerns early. Learn more about why this is important by reading our blog post on what happens if you never replace your implants.

Signs Your Implants May Need Replacing

While most patients experience few problems with their implants, it’s crucial to be aware of signs that may indicate complications:

  • Changes in the shape or size of the breasts
  • Hardening or unusual firmness, which may signal capsular contracture
  • Any noticeable lumps or bumps
  • Persistent breast pain

If you notice any of these changes, I encourage you to reach out immediately for an evaluation.

The Importance of Timely Implant Replacement

If your implants are approaching the end of their typical lifespan or if you notice any changes or issues, revision surgery can enhance your overall satisfaction. Updating your implants offers an opportunity to refresh your look and address any concerns.

I work closely with my patients to understand their aesthetic goals and help them choose the best options for their needs. The replacement—or removal—process can rejuvenate your appearance and help you achieve your desired goals.

Advances in Implant Technology

It’s worth noting that breast implant technology continually evolves. New materials and techniques are developed regularly, improving both the safety and longevity of implants. When considering replacement or revision, I’ll discuss the latest options available to ensure you’re informed and comfortable with your choices.

Start Your Journey

In summary, while breast implants do not last a lifetime, with the right care and regular monitoring, you can enjoy your breast augmentation results for many years. Understanding the factors that influence their longevity empowers you to make informed decisions about your breast health.
