Angular, contoured jawlines are considered universally attractive—for both women and men. As a board-certified plastic surgeon, I offer both surgical and nonsurgical options—such as neck liposuction or injectables—at my Los Angeles-area practice to create the jawlines patients desire.
In this post, I’ll explain how to get a better jawline, describe who is a good candidate for each of these 6 options, and showcase real patient results in before-and-after photos.
Surgical Options
The treatment best suited for sculpting a well-defined jawline depends on your specific concerns. The best treatment for a double chin, for example, won’t necessarily be the best sagging jawline treatment. It’s also worth noting that I may combine procedures to produce the best jawline contours.
Neck Lift
Patients with jowls and saggy neck skin are usually best served by a neck lift. Often combined with a mini facelift, a neck lift produces dramatic results and is an excellent choice for people who are self-conscious about the appearance of their necks. The procedure has a 95% “worth it” rating on the RealSelf website because the results are so transformational.
I tailor my technique to the patient’s needs. For example, I may perform a “skin only” neck lift that tightens skin on the throat and is less invasive than other techniques, such as platysmaplasty. A platysmaplasty addresses neck bands and tightens muscles as well as skin.
Neck Liposuction
Fat tends to accumulate in the neck for some people, even if they’re not overweight. Removing this fat is necessary to create a defined jawline. Liposuction for the neck, sometimes called chin or submental liposuction, requires more precision than needed for larger areas, so I prefer to use power-assisted liposuction (PAL) for these patients. It’s also gentler than other liposuction techniques, minimizing trauma to the treatment area and reducing recovery time. I’ve found that combining laser skin tightening with neck liposuction produces impressive results for my Los Angeles-area patients.
Chin Implants
Implants can benefit people who have “weak” chins. A more prominent chin creates a stronger distinction between the neck and jawline for a more appealing look. I insert the implant through a small incision, usually made below the chin, that is barely visible. Patients uncertain about getting implants can choose fillers as a temporary solution. Fillers can give them an idea of how an implant would look.
Buccal Fat Removal
Buccal fat removal, a procedure gaining popularity for its ability to sculpt the face, targets the cheek’s buccal fat pads, which can create a rounder facial appearance. Extracting these pads enhances the cheeks’ angularity and the jawline’s definition. This treatment is well suited for patients whose face lacks definition due to these fat pads, not excess weight. The outcome is a subtly more contoured, sculpted facial profile that enhances the natural structure of the bones.
Nonsurgical Options
Dermal Fillers for Jawline Contouring
Defining the angle between the lower jaw and the earlobe with filler can enhance your profile by making you appear slimmer and more youthful. Dermal fillers such as JUVÉDERM® VOLUX and VOLUMA, Restylane Lyft, RHA® 4, and RADIESSE® offer immediate jawline enhancement. By injecting fillers into strategic areas along the jawline, we create a more pronounced and defined edge. This treatment is ideal for patients with mild to moderate aesthetic concerns or as a supplement to other procedures.
KYBELLA®
Another nonsurgical treatment that helps define the jawline is KYBELLA, which is specifically designed to dissolve fat under the chin. A series of treatments reduce the appearance of a double chin, resulting in a more contoured and defined jawline.
